I may be slightly late on this, but I wanted to talk about Ernie Harwell.  I can’t honestly say I’m one of the many people around Michigan who stayed up listening to his broadcasts growing up or while on family vacations.  Maybe I’m just too young.  Although I wish I were old enough to recall more Ernie memories, there were so many great ones after his passing told in the Free Press and on 97.1, it filled my heart with pride to be a Michigander, Tiger fan and a fondness for the man that I might not have otherwise recalled.  I only have one solid personal memory, when I volunteered with the Detroit Historical Society(museum?) to salvage various things from Tigers Stadium months before it was razed.  I kind of went off on my own exploring and ended up on the field, off in the distance there was Ernie wearing his signature hat with some other guy surveying the scene, most likely talking about how to save the stadium.  His passion for that place was so great, I only wish they saved some part of it after all the work he put into it.

In lieu of going to his visitation at Comerica, I went to the official Tiger’s tribute with my lovely friend Merissa.  It was a fantastic winning effort against the Yankees on a great night for baseball that I’m sure Ernie would’ve enjoyed very much.  He was one of the classiest, humble people around, and is missed greatly.
